Hey Planet Lovers!
In our previous blogs, we've introduced to you some easy ways how you can reduce waste in your kitchen. In today's blog, we're talking another important room in your house - yes, your BATHROOM!
Here are 7 EASY WAYS you can create an ECO-FRIENDLY BATHROOM (AND MAKE IT PRETTY)! So wave goodbye to old dirty shampoo bottles clogging up the floor of your shower, and say hello to attractive bathroom filled with green, glass and wood and not a piece of single use plastic in sight :-)
Are you ready? LET'S GO...
1. PLANTS, PLANTS, PLANTS!
No matter how small the space – fill it with plants! Bathrooms are environments with fluctuating temperatures - sometimes being very humid and often they don’t receive much sunlight. However, there are some hardy plants that will survive and grow in these conditions, like aloe vera and spider plants.
Real plants are great for the air quality in your room through absorbing toxins and releasing oxygen. Plus, they are fantastic for decorating and can make even a small bathroom look pretty!
2. THE BASICS - SOAP, SHOWER GEL AND SHAMPOO
One super easy swap is to use bars of soap instead of shower gel! Keep them on a soap dish away from the direct stream of the shower and you’ll find they can last far longer than a typical shower gel plastic bottle where one squeeze quickly washes away.
For hand soap, shampoo and conditioner, buy reusable bottles and visit a zero waste shop if you live near one to refill them over and over again. Not only does this save plastic containers from becoming waste, but it also allows you to create a beautiful aesthetic in your shower with glass pump top containers!
3. LOO ROLL
This one is fairly easy and straightforward. Choose a brand of toilet roll made with recycled paper that comes wrapped in non-plastic, recyclable material. There are a few options out there, they might be a little more expensive but it’s an important swap if you can afford it.
4. TOILETRIES
You've seen it, but have you tried it yet?! Buying a bamboo toothbrush and a metal tongue cleaner instead of plastic ones is one easy way to get rid of plastic in your bathroom. Buy compostable floss or an electric water flosser as a plastic alternative. And if you want to take it to the next level, there are even zero waste toothpaste alternatives that come in glass jars or as toothpaste tablets!
5. MAKEUP
Remove makeup with reusable, washable pads and a flannel instead of make-up wipes or even cotton pads which may be blended with synthetic fibres. Use a facial cleansing bar or a cleanser that comes in glass or from a company with a genuine recycling scheme, and you're good to go :-)
6. SHAVING
We'll keep it nice and simple. Invest in a safety razor instead of using disposable ones, so the only waste created is the metal blade!
7. HAIRCARE AND SKINCARE
Everyone has different routines and needs for their own hair, skin and makeup. We recognise that not everything comes in sustainable packaging yet, but there are still plenty of environmentally friendly alternatives out there to explore, from wooden combs to konjac sponges for exfoliating your skin.
If you can’t find the skincare products you need in plastic free versions, try buying larger containers so the life of the plastic container is extended and less waste is created.
... So that's it folks! We hope this list helps you to consider how to make your own bathroom not only more sustainable, but also more aesthetic. Every little swap really does make a difference and creating a beautiful eco-friendly space in your home is something to get excited about, isn't it?!
Love from Earthastic :-)
