HOW TO BE ECO-CONSCIOUS DURING YOUR WEEKLY FOOD SHOPPING 🌎

8 december 2021 om 09:00:00

Hey planet lovers!

We know it can be so difficult to be eco conscious during your weekly food shopping, so here are some tips to ensure you are more sustainable when you next visit the supermarket...

1. WALK TO THE SUPERMARKET

In Europe, the number of people using food delivery services is expected to reach 96.9 million by 2024! Although walking to the supermarket can be inconvenient when you are busy, it can make a huge difference to the planet, particularly as cars burn petroleum which contributes to air pollution. If you live far away from your supermarket, try taking public transport as this can also reduce your carbon footprint.

2. BE CONSCIOUS OF UNNECESSARY PACKAGING WASTE

So much food is unnecessarily packaged. You could try and purchase less packaging, by taking your own reusable bag for picking up fruit and vegetables. Reusable shopping bags or Tote bags are great, as they are cost-effective and fantastic for the planet.

3. SHOP LOCALLY, IF POSSIBLE

Supermarkets are not usually the most sustainable stores. You can find online amazing small eco businesses to buy from and your purchases will help support the environment, as many of these companies have sustainable initiatives, such as making donations to green charities. If you want to purchase your food in person, you can visit a local farmer’s markets. They have amazing seasonal fruit and vegetable stock, which have been locally sourced and not shipped from abroad. Purchasing from these markets not only helps the planet, but also benefits your community!

4. TRY REDUCING MEAT CONSUMPTION

Animal agriculture is negatively affecting our planet, because it contributes to deforestation and land degradation. Reducing your intake of meat could make a huge difference in combating the climate crisis. In supermarkets now, there are so many vegetarian and vegan choices available. Maybe try experimenting with different vegetarian meals and slowly reduce your consumption of meat and fish? Being vegetarian or vegan for a few days a week will also allow you to vary your diet and explore new dishes!

IT CAN BE DAUNTING AT THE BEGINNING, BUT SO WORTH IT!

Finally, remember that making transitions to your routine can be difficult and so try one of these suggestions every week and see how it goes! It is not about doing everything, but about each of us doing something so we can make a difference. We hope these tips were helpful 💚🌎
